NVIDIA, OpenAI Announce ‘Biggest AI Infrastructure Deployment in History’

“This is the biggest AI infrastructure project in history,” said NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang in the interview. “This partnership is about building an AI infrastructure that enables AI to go from the labs into the world.”
Through the partnership, OpenAI will deploy at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems for OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure, including the NVIDIA Vera Rubin platform. NVIDIA also intends to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI progressively as each gigawatt is deployed.
“Without enough computational resources, Altman explained, people would have to choose between impactful use cases, for example either researching a cancer cure or offering free education. “No one wants to make that choice,” he said. “And so increasingly, as we see this, the answer is just much more capacity so that we can serve the massive need and opportunity.””

Cache of Devices Capable of Crashing Cell Network Is Found Near U.N.

“My instinct is this is espionage,” said Mr. Ferrante, who previously served in top cybersecurity positions at the White House and the F.B.I. In addition to jamming the cellular network, he said, such a large amount of equipment near the United Nations could be used for eavesdropping. James A. Lewis, a cybersecurity researcher at the Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington, said that only a handful of countries could pull off such an operation, including Russia, China and Israel. In addition to the Secret Service, the New York Police Department, the Justice Department, Homeland Security Investigations and the office of the director of national intelligence are investigating. “This is an ongoing investigation, but there’s absolutely no reason to believe we won’t find more of these devices in other cities,” Mr. McCool said.

“There are a number of reasons why building subsea cables would appeal to Big Tech companies like Meta. First, sole ownership of the route and cable would give Meta first dibs in capacity to support traffic on its own properties. Meta, like Google, also plays up the lift it has provided to regions by way of its subsea investments, claiming that projects like Marea in Europe and others in Southeast Asia have contributed more than “half a trillion dollars” to economies in those areas. Yet there is a more pragmatic impetus for these investments: Tech companies — rather than telecoms carriers, traditional builders, and owners of these cables — want to have more direct ownership of the pipes needed to deliver content, advertising, and more to users around the world. According to its earnings reports, Meta makes more money outside of North America than in its home market itself. Having priority on dedicated subsea cabling can help ensure quality of service on that traffic.”

A Tale of Unwanted Disruption: My Week Without Amazon

“This incident has led me to question my relationship with Amazon. After nearly a decade of loyalty, I’ve been given a harsh reminder that a misunderstanding can lead to such drastic measures. It seems more reasonable to handle such issues in a more compartmentalized way, rather than a blanket shutdown of all services. Due to this experience, I am seriously considering discontinuing my use of Amazon Echo devices and will caution others about this incident. This ordeal has made a case for a more personalized home assistant system, perhaps utilizing Raspberry Pi devices scattered around the house.”

Emergency SOS via satellite made possible by $450M Apple investment

“A $450 million investment from Apple’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund provides the critical infrastructure that supports Emergency SOS via satellite for iPhone 14 models. Available to customers in the US and Canada beginning later this month, the new service will allow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models to connect directly to a satellite, enabling messaging with emergency services when outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. A majority of the funding goes to Globalstar, a global satellite service headquartered in Covington, Louisiana, with facilities across the US. Apple’s investment provides critical enhancements to Globalstar’s satellite network and ground stations, ensuring iPhone 14 users are able to connect to emergency services when off the grid. At Globalstar, more than 300 employees support the new service.”

En interdisant à TSMC de vendre ses puces dernier cri au champion chinois du téléphone, Huawei, l’administration américaine a donné un coup d’arrêt à toute la chaîne de l’électronique chinoise, fer de lance de sa conquête mondiale. Privé de ces puces pour ses smartphones, Huawei a été éjecté violemment de cet immense marché. Car les producteurs locaux sont encore très loin en matière de technologie.La Chine importe aujourd’hui pour plus de 370 milliards de dollars de puces par an, davantage que de pétrole !”

“One of the jobs performed by our smaller facilities is to respond to DNS queries. DNS is the address book of the internet, enabling the simple web names we type into browsers to be translated into specific server IP addresses. Those translation queries are answered by our authoritative name servers that occupy well known IP addresses themselves, which in turn are advertised to the rest of the internet via another protocol called the border gateway protocol (BGP).
To ensure reliable operation, our DNS servers disable those BGP advertisements if they themselves can not speak to our data centers, since this is an indication of an unhealthy network connection. In the recent outage the entire backbone was removed from operation, making these locations declare themselves unhealthy and withdraw those BGP advertisements. The end result was that our DNS servers became unreachable even though they were still operational. This made it impossible for the rest of the internet to find our servers.
All of this happened very fast. And as our engineers worked to figure out what was happening and why, they faced two large obstacles: first, it was not possible to access our data centers through our normal means because their networks were down, and second, the total loss of DNS broke many of the internal tools we’d normally use to investigate and resolve outages like this.”
