Rakuten est quant à lui un groupe qui grossit rapidement par le biais d’acquisitions diverses dans le monde, dont des galeries marchandes, comme PriceMinister en France, ainsi que des prestataires de services comme le canadien Kobo, fabricant de liseuses et gérant de librairies virtuelles. En 2012, Rakuten avait investi 100 millions de dollars dans Pinterest.
