Et ce n’est certainement pas un argument que Mercedes-Benz veut risquer.À terme, il sera donc certainement nécessaire que les régulateurs s’emparent directement de la question et dictent les comportements à adopter par les intelligences artificielles, tout comme le code de la route est censé dicter le comportement des automobilistes humains. Mais le législateur aura certainement la main tremblante lorsqu’il faudra imposer par la loi aux développeurs d’intelligences artificielles qu’ils privilégient la vie d’une femme enceinte par rapport à celle d’un enfant, ou celle d’un trentenaire par rapport à un retraité.

Trips will be free for the time being, rather than the standard local rate of $1.30 per mile. In the long run, Kalanick says, prices will fall so low that the per-mile cost of travel, even for long trips in rural areas, will be cheaper in a driverless Uber than in a private car. “That could be seen as a threat,” says Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson. “We see it as an opportunity.”

This was a minor crash with serious implications: Google’s autonomous vehicles have been in accidents before, but the tech giant was always quick to note that its technology was never at fault (the cars tend to get rear-ended at red lights). It may not be able to say that anymore.
