Meta chief AI scientist Yann LeCun plans to exit and launch own start-up

“Zuckerberg’s pivot followed the botched release of Meta’s most recent Llama 4 model, which performed worse than the most advanced offerings from Google, OpenAI and Anthropic, while its Meta AI chatbot has failed to gain traction with consumers.LeCun, however, has long argued that the LLMs that Zuckerberg has put at the centre of his strategy are “useful” but will never be able to reason and plan like humans, increasingly appearing at odds with his boss’s AI vision.
Within Fair, LeCun has instead focused on developing an entirely new generation of AI systems that he hopes will power machines with human-level intelligence, known as “world models”. These systems aim to understand the physical world by learning from videos and spatial data rather than just language, though LeCun has said it could take a decade to fully develop the architecture.”

“Robby Starbuck, 36, of Nashville, was appointed in August as an adviser by Meta – owner of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other tech platforms – in an August lawsuit settlement. […]
Since his appointment, Starbuck has baselessly claimed that individual shooters in the US were motivated by leftist ideology, described faith-based protest groups as communists, and without evidence tied Democratic lawmakers to murders.
During Dhillon’s leadership, the CAL pursued a myriad of culture-war lawsuits on behalf of rightwing influencers, “de-transitioners” and parents of transgender children, and churches that had been subject to California’s pandemic restrictions. Beirich, the extremism expert, said: “This is just another example of Meta caving to Trump and his allies, and bogus charges of political bias, and makes a mockery of fair content moderation on Meta’s various platforms.” Elsewhere in his comments to the Guardian, Starbuck wrote: “You should be honest with Guardian readers about the fact that you’ve been accused of extremely close ties with antifa.””

The Ministry of Empowerment

“Fuck you Facebook. That was the first thought I had when I woke up this morning. Followed by: What ministry is Mark Zuckerberg volunteering to manage for the dictators of the world? All I could think of is how Orwell’s Ministry of Love is about hate. So what are we creating here? The Ministry of Empowerment to ensure the oppression of the most vulnerable? Lovely. But maybe you, dear reader, have a better Ministry name for their new organizational identity?”

“Your glasses will be able to translate speech in real time between English and either Spanish, French, or Italian. When you’re talking to someone speaking one of those three languages, you’ll hear what they say in English through the glasses’ open-ear speakers or viewed as transcripts on your phone, and vice versa. Not only is this great for traveling, it should help break down language barriers and bring people closer together. ”

Brussels probes Google and Meta secret ads deal to target teens

A montage of a teenager using a phone with the logos of Google and Meta in the background

“During the ad campaign, first revealed in an FT investigation published in August, staff at Google were helping Meta bypass the search company’s policies on how online advertising can be directed to minors. While Google bans ad personalisation for teens, the campaign for Instagram on YouTube deliberately pushed messages to a group of users labelled as “unknown” in its system. Google employees told Meta that it had internal data that showed this group skewed towards under-18s and was a way of “hacking” the audience safeguards in their system.”
