23andMe Just Filed for Bankruptcy. You Should Delete Your Data Now

“Users of the 23andMe test send the company samples of their saliva to learn about their ancestry and possible health risks. Wojcicki said that 85% of the company’s customers also consent to their genetic data being used to research diseases. Unlike with other forms of medical data, few guardrails protect genetic data stored by companies like 23andMe. According to Wirecutter’s guide to home DNA kits, “the vast majority of these companies are not subject to the HIPAA laws governing the privacy of your health and medical records.””

Digital Therapists Get Stressed Too, Study Finds

A person's hand holding a smartphone at a desk.

““Americans have become a lonely people, socializing through screens, and now we tell ourselves that talking with computers can relieve our malaise,” Mr. Carr said in an email.Although the study suggests that chatbots could act as assistants to human therapy and calls for careful oversight, that was not enough for Mr. Carr. “Even a metaphorical blurring of the line between human emotions and computer outputs seems ethically questionable,” he said.People who use these sorts of chatbots should be fully informed about exactly how they were trained, said James E. Dobson, a cultural scholar who is an adviser on artificial intelligence at Dartmouth.“Trust in language models depends upon knowing something about their origins,” he said.”

The EPA is cracking down on cybersecurity threats

““Foreign governments have disrupted some water systems with cyberattacks and may have embedded the capability to disable them in the future,” the enforcement alert says. One example it cites is Volt Typhoon, a People’s Republic of China state-sponsored cyber group that has “compromised the IT environments of multiple critical infrastructure organizations,” according to a Department of Homeland Security advisory issued in February.”

AI has better ‘bedside manner’ than some doctors, study finds

Doctor & Patient ChatGPT

“ChatGPT appears to have a better ‘bedside manner’ than some doctors – at least when their written advice is rated for quality and empathy, a study has shown. The findings highlight the potential for AI assistants to play a role in medicine, according to the authors of the work, who suggest such agents could help draft doctors’ communications with patients. “The opportunities for improving healthcare with AI are massive,” said Dr John Ayers, of the University of California San Diego. However, others noted that the findings do not mean ChatGPT is actually a better doctor and cautioned against delegating clinical responsibility given that the chatbot has a tendency to produce “facts” that are untrue.”

Predicting sex from retinal fundus photographs using automated deep learning

Figure 2

“Deep learning may transform health care, but model development has largely been dependent on availability of advanced technical expertise. Herein we present the development of a deep learning model by clinicians without coding, which predicts reported sex from retinal fundus photographs. A model was trained on 84,743 retinal fundus photos from the UK Biobank dataset. External validation was performed on 252 fundus photos from a tertiary ophthalmic referral center.”

YouTube Bans Anti-Vaccine Misinformation

YouTube said it was banning the accounts of several prominent anti-vaccine activists from its platform, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s.

“In a blog post, YouTube said it would remove videos claiming that vaccines do not reduce rates of transmission or contraction of disease, and content that includes misinformation on the makeup of the vaccines. Claims that approved vaccines cause autism, cancer or infertility, or that the vaccines contain trackers, will also be removed.
Prominent anti-vaccine activists have long been able to build huge audiences online, helped along by the algorithmic powers of social networks that prioritize videos and posts that are particularly successful at capturing people’s attention. A nonprofit, the Center for Countering Digital Hate, published research this year showing that a group of 12 people were responsible for sharing 65 percent of all anti-vaccine messaging on social media, calling the group the “Disinformation Dozen.” In July, the White House cited the research as it criticized tech companies for allowing misinformation about the coronavirus and vaccines to spread widely, sparking a tense back-and-forth between the administration and Facebook.”
