“YouTube Music is Google’s most direct competitor to Spotify yet, coming with “a reimagined mobile app” and a new desktop player, both of them designed specifically for music. The YouTube advantage, argues Google, is that it will combine all the official versions of songs with access to “thousands” of related playlists, remixes, covers, live versions, and of course, music videos. Google’s AI mastery is also being integrated into YouTube Music, with the promise that the app will discover songs either by lyric or just a general description”.

Back in 2015…

Today, the video giant is rolling out a new app, YouTube Music, that attempts to capitalize on its dominance in this space. The app is free, and you can use it in free, ad-supported mode, but it becomes a lot more powerful and interesting if you pay for a YouTube Red subscription.

“With Google’s AI assistant making calls on our behalf, I worry it will become easier for us to abuse small businesses. If it’s as simple as telling Google Duplex to make an appointment, it’s just as easy to constantly reschedule or not show up altogether because there’s no connection between you and the human worker who picked up the phone to arrange your reservation. You don’t feel bad for the number of requests and changes when someone (or something) else is doing it for you”.

Facebook or Google — which should worry us more?

«Epstein’s group asked 661 Americans to pick one of two candidates in an Australian election. Since it was presumed they did not know much about Antipodean politics, the participants were instructed to research them with a Google-type search engine that offered the usual autocomplete suggestions when words were typed in. However, the researchers also varied the search suggestions shown beneath a candidate’s name, including a range of positive and negative words. The results were stark. When participants were later questioned about their voting preferences, changing the ratio of positive to negative suggestions in the autocomplete was shown to be capable of shifting the preferences of undecided voters by nearly 80 per cent — even though participants seemed free to search for any material they wanted».

«Les early adopters qui peuvent démocratiser une technologie ont adopté le réflexe des messageries chiffrées de bout en bout. Apple chiffre les messages de ses clients par défaut et sur Android, WhatsApp ou Signal le font également. Le RCS est un standard aux mains des opérateurs, Google et ses partenaires n’étant que des relais, des points de réception. Cela signifie qu’un message RCS n’est pas sécurisé, peut être intercepté et reste sur le réseau des opérateurs qui ne sont pas connus pour être les derniers à plier aux demandes des autorités».
