Major AWS outage takes down Fortnite, Alexa, Snapchat, and more

“Amazon Web Services (AWS) is currently experiencing a major outage that has taken down online services, including Amazon, Alexa, Snapchat, Fortnite, ChatGPT, Epic Games Store, Epic Online Services, and more. The AWS status checker is reporting that multiple services are “impacted” by operational issues, and that the company is “investigating increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region” — though outages are also impacting services in other regions globally.
Users on Reddit are reporting that the Alexa smart assistant is down and unable to respond to queries or complete requests, and in my own experience, I found that routines like pre-set alarms are not functioning. The AWS issue also appears to be impacting platforms running on its cloud network, including Perplexity, Airtable, Canva, and the McDonalds app. The cause of the outage hasn’t been confirmed, and it’s unclear when regular service will be restored.“
Perplexity is down right now,” Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said on X. “The root cause is an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it.””

Les mini-publics délibératifs, très en faveur ces derniers temps, pourraient certainement jouer un rôle, à condition toutefois de se faire la caisse de résonance et de jouer un rôle d’éclaireurs d’un débat plus large. Seule l’implication informée du public dans son ensemble dans la discussion des algorithmes et de leurs implications peut soutenir l’effort de régulation de la part des pouvoirs publics nécessaire à réaliser un alignement compatible avec l’autodétermination démocratique.”

“Robby Starbuck, 36, of Nashville, was appointed in August as an adviser by Meta – owner of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other tech platforms – in an August lawsuit settlement. […]
Since his appointment, Starbuck has baselessly claimed that individual shooters in the US were motivated by leftist ideology, described faith-based protest groups as communists, and without evidence tied Democratic lawmakers to murders.

Beirich, the extremism expert, said: “This is just another example of Meta caving to Trump and his allies, and bogus charges of political bias, and makes a mockery of fair content moderation on Meta’s various platforms.” Elsewhere in his comments to the Guardian, Starbuck wrote: “You should be honest with Guardian readers about the fact that you’ve been accused of extremely close ties with antifa.””

California becomes first state to regulate AI companion chatbots

“California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a landmark bill on Monday that regulates AI companion chatbots, making it the first state in the nation to require AI chatbot operators to implement safety protocols for AI companions. The law, SB 243, is designed to protect children and vulnerable users from some of the harms associated with AI companion chatbot use. It holds companies — from the big labs like Meta and OpenAI to more focused companion startups like Character AI and Replika — legally accountable if their chatbots fail to meet the law’s standards.”

“OpenAI has blocked users from making videos of Martin Luther King Jr. on its Sora app after the estate of the civil rights leader complained about the spread of « disrespectful depictions. »
Since the company launched Sora three weeks ago, hyper-realistic deepfake videos of King saying crude, offensive or racist things have rocketed across social media, including fake videos of King stealing from a grocery store, speeding away from police and perpetuating racial stereotypes.
Late on Thursday, OpenAI and King’s estate released a joint statement saying AI videos portraying King are being blocked as the company « strengthens guardrails for historical figures. »
OpenAI said it believes there are « strong free speech interests » in allowing users to make AI deepfakes of historical figures, but that estates should have ultimate control over how those likenesses are used.”

“ Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have tracked data centers’ growing water footprint in California. He says California is “well positioned” to support the data center boom, and he is reluctant to “impose rigid reporting requirements.” The governor signed other bills on water supply goals, groundwater dispute resolution, and water theft from fire hydrants.”
